PUBLICATIONS
The Institute publishes a quarterly journal, Indian Chemical Engineer (ICE), which has been the Institute's main organ since 1959. Even before that, Transactions of Chemical Engineers was regularly published between 1948 and 1958.
The ICE, divided into Sections A and B, is a compact journal, striking a balance between fundamental research papers from India and abroad in' Section A and news snippets on industrial and corporate front, environment and health hazards, recent research trends, latest software, etc., in Section B. This section also features technical articles and offers in-house news.
The Special Issues of ICE are rich sources of information with contributions from noted academics and industry bigwigs. Extensively focusing on a topical issue in vast arena of Chemical Engineering, these are much sought- after by professionals and students for future reference.
The journal's Editorial Board and the International Advisory Board include eminent professors and scientists in India and abroad as its members.
Research and Developments
The Institute is recognized by the Department
of Science and Technology, Government of
India, as a Scientific and Industrial Research
Organization. Some of the major R&D projects
undertaken by the Institute in recent times
include:
- Studies in the Problems and Prospects of Indian Fertilizer Industry.
- Comprehensive Assessment of Management of Municipal Solid Wastes in Kolkata.
- Membrane-based Technique in Desalination of Brackish Water for Generation of Drinking Water.
- A Study on Improvement of Quality Management System at Naihati Works of Jenson & Nicholson (India) Ltd.
Currently, the following initiatives are underway:
- Membrance distillation in applications of:
- sea water desalination into potable quality water and
- fruit juice concentration (sugarcane, apple and watermelon).
- Surface water treatment by micro filtration (decontamination of bacterial virus) as replacement for conventional chlorination as disinfectant for drinking quality water.
- Filtration/Ultra Filtration in clarification of sugarcane juice (replacement of conventional sulfitation process).
- Transesterification of straight vegetable oil (SVO)- Jatropha and Honge - for production of Bio-diesel.
- Simultaneous desalination and arsenic decontamination of brackish ground water by membrane techniques (UF /MF & RO).
- Decontamination and concentration of date juice for bottling as finished product.
Annual Session / Seminar / Workshops
The Annual Session of the Institute, popularly
known as the Indian Chemical Engineering
Congress (CHEMCON), is the most important
event in the calendar of the IIChE. Held every
December at one of its centres, the four-day
'CHEMCON features a host of events, which
include memorial lectures, plenary lectures,
seminars, symposia, panel discussion,
exhibitions, ete. To the Indian chemical
engineering fraternity in the country and
abroad, CHEMCON offers the most attractive
platform, ensuring four days of intensive
interface with the best of brains - national and
international - in chemical engineering and
allied fields.
Three memorial lectures, namely Dr H L Roy
Memorial Lecture (the Founder President), prof
N R Kamath Memorial Lecture (a distinguished
professor associated with the University
Institute of Chemical Technology,. Mumbai, and
lIT, Mumbai), and C K Murthy Memorial Lecture
(an accomplished chemical engineer who
passed away prematurely) set the tune of every
CHEMCON. These lectures are delivered by the
who's who of academia, elite research
establishments and the corporate world in the
national and international circuit and they are
a veritable treasure trove of knowledge.
CHEMCONs are often held in collaboration with
premier chemical engineering bodies of the
USA, UK, Australia, Canada, etc, with the latter
sending big delegation, holding joint symposia/
seminars and taking part in meaningful
dialogue.
Lectures by CHEMCON Distinguished Speakers
and a host of international symposia are the
other prestige events, where one gets access
and exposure to the latest happenings in the
ever-expanding domain of chemical
engineering.
CHEMCONS apart, the Institute HQ and the
Regional Centres organize seminars,
workshops, refresher courses and so on round
the year for update and enhancement of
t~chnical manpower.
SCHEMCONS (Students Chemical Engineering
Congresses) are planned every year from this
year (2005) on wards.
